Innovative & Original June 11, 2008 Yolanda S. Bean (Chicago, IL) I really loved this book! I am a big fan of dog-lit, and this certainly is one of the more inventive stories about a dog and his family. This is a story of a family, as told through the eyes of their Labrador - a Lab with a sacred mission and philosophy to protect his family. There is so much to say about this great book, but I daren't given away any of the exciting happenings. It is just a really great book, and fun to read.
If only my dogs could read . . . May 4, 2008 ChainedMelody (Rockville, MD) I'd sit them down and have them read about Prince, faithful adherent to the Labrador Pact, which insists upon duty above all else and the responsibility of dogs to serve and protect their Family. This smartly written tale centers around the Hunter Family (is there a pun there?) and their dog, Prince, who does all that he can to save the Family members from themselves. Prince hears all, sees all, and most importantly, smells all. As he observes the Family falling apart right in front of his nose, Prince ruefully acknowledges that only by breaking the Labrador Pact can he save them. What is a dog to do? If only Henry, Prince's mentor in the intricacies of the Pact, were still alive to work through this dilemma with him. But Prince is forced to make his own decision--and it's a fateful one, both for the Family and for himself. Prince does indeed save the Family, but only at the cost of his own life. Will he therefore be denied his Eternal Reward, being reunited with his own family? That's the ultimate question that is left for the reader to decide. I withheld the last star in my rating because I felt that the book was just a tad too long, and occasionally was gimmicky (although far from as cliched as one might expect based upon this synopsis). Prince, his canine friends, and his Family provide the reader with many laughs, but ultimately leave the reader in tears. (This isn't a spoiler; the novel opens with Prince waiting at the vet's office to be put down.) I, for one, am sure that Prince has earned his Eternal Reward. I wish that my own Labradors could be as faithful to the Pact as this book's hero.
One of the Worst Books I Have Ever Read April 30, 2008 Amazed (Houston, TX USA) 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
If you have ever loved a dog, do yourself a favor and don't read this book. Of course, if you enjoy reading about a healthy young dog being put down, or need to be depressed, scoop it right up. Thank goodness I got it at the library and didn't spend money on it. What passes for literature these days amazes me.
Sad tail April 19, 2008 Michele 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
Very clever premise. But I think the reader needs to know that Prince dies at the end. And for no good reason. Very sad; too sad.
Alternative Version April 7, 2008 Ms. Neverinamillion (New York City) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Hello. I just wanted to let everyone know this is the American version of The Last Family in England. Why US publishers insist on editing UK books for American audiences, I will never understand.
